TikTok Ban

Call me crazy, but I feel like much of the fear about China spying on US Citizens, is just an excuse by the US Government, to stir up people's fears about communism and justify the proposed ban of the TikTok app. If they were so concerned about data breaches and foreign influence or spying, Facebook and Instagram should have been banned years ago when it was believed that Facebook was being manipulated by Cambridge Analytica to influence the 2016 Presidential election. Don't get me wrong, I think that governments, whether foreign or domestic, spying on anyone's online activity, should not be happening. I also understand that there are data breaches that occur where people's financial information gets stolen online. Honestly I don't think the US gives a flying shit about its own citizens and their personal data per se. The average American does not possess any special or secret information that would interest any big government. I highly doubt China gives a rat's ass what a fourteen year old kid is lip syncing to on TikTok, for example.
On the other hand it could be just an excuse for government overreach.
First they'll ban TikTok, then they'll look for other reasons to ban the other social media platforms too.
People exchange information and use social media to organize.
The dinosaurs in Congress don't like that their bullshit is being called out and more widely spread among younger folks.
Do I think social media platforms can be harmful in some ways, yes.
But they don't want people to organize. And they say the quiet part aloud.
Senator Pete Ricketts (R- Nebraska) admitted this, as well as Senator Maria Cantwell (D- Washington), staying that there are more hashtags about the news than there are on Instagram. Professor Scott Galloway adds to it by stating the Chinese Communist Party is manipulating the information regarding the Palestinian-Israel conflict to stir shit up in America.
This sounds like a bunch of horseshit too. They just do not want the resistance movements that are currently taking place on college campuses.
